Im in an Indie rock band and we are looking for some new cool weird things we can do to be unique-ish. Some things we have already thought of are: Speaking instead of singing, distorting vocals, playing oboe in one of our songs and getting some new interesting pedals. Anyone have any other cool ideas?|||Make use of odd time signatures in composing.
Get instruments that aren't normally associated with your music (trumpet, trombone, violin, theremin, hurdy gurdy, sitar, electric organ, etc.) and play it in a way that fits with your style.
Effects pedals. Make use of them. If you want to get a retro rock or shoegaze sound, go find a "Big Muff." That's the one that The Smashing Pumpkins used a lot. They're kind of costly, I found one for $200, but it's worth it. Regular effects pedals you can find really easy for as low as $50.
Draw influence from as many different styles of music. Don't go for traditional hipster, soft rock, with a catchy rhythm and punky attitude. Instead mix in Heavy Metal, 2 Tone Ska, Acid Rock, R%26amp;B, Gothic Rock, Dream Pop, Art Rock, Dance Punk, Glam Rock, Folk Punk, Noise Rock, or any number of genres.
Have more than one singer. Each singer should have a voice that is unique so it doesn't sound like multiple all trying to sing like each other.
Lastly.... you'll want to have a crazy stage show. It's important to make good music, but people will forget you easily if you don't put on a cool show. Dance, talk to the crowd, be funny (you might want to write jokes, gags, and dialogue between you and other band members ahead of time), have people bring out all sorts of props (they can either serve a symbolic purpose or be irreverant and just ridiculous or cool), and have weird, outlandish, or even campy outfits. The point is, put yourself out there. You'll want the audience to constantly be guessing what you're doing next. Another great idea is to craft your very own stage persona and stage presence. If you want to be wacky, be obnoxious, ridiculous, bouncy, and over-the-top goofy. If you want to be creepy go between highs and lows of slow, ominous movement to high-energy erractic movements. If you're on an instrument it may be harder to do these things, but if you're not (like I am) then you can make full use of the stage.
Some of my favorite stage personalities include: Alice Cooper, David Bowie, Aaron Barrett (of Reel Big Fish), Marilyn Manson (from 1996-2003 at least, he's kind of boring now), and Lady GaGa. All of them have very unique personas.|||Delay + reverb + phaser + chorus + tremolo pedal + Ostrich tuning = your new sound
Oh, don't use a noise gate.|||I think using usual musical instruments or tuning the instruments in a unique way.|||Sorry The Velvet Underground beat you to it about 45 years ago.|||have sex with the instruments|||Learn some jazz, blues and latin. Add some acoustic guitar songs.
